Eliminate Abnormal Tissue With
Cold Therapy

Cryotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment that uses extreme cold to freeze and destroy abnormal or damaged skin tissue. Commonly performed with liquid nitrogen, cryotherapy is often used to treat warts, skin tags, and precancerous lesions such as actinic keratoses. The treated tissue gradually dries, forms a scab, and sheds as healthy skin replaces it. Because the treatment is precise, cryotherapy is frequently performed in the office with little to no downtime.

What Does Cryotherapy Treat?

  • Common warts and plantar warts
  • Skin tags and benign growths
  • Actinic keratoses and precancerous lesions
  • Select superficial sun-damaged areas
  • Certain rough, thickened skin lesions
  • Small areas of abnormal tissue growth
  • Persistent lesions resistant to topical care

How Does Cryotherapy Work?

Cryotherapy works by exposing abnormal tissue to extremely cold temperatures, typically through liquid nitrogen. The rapid freezing process forms ice crystals inside the targeted cells, damaging their cellular structure and interrupting blood flow to the tissue. As the treated cells lose viability, the body recognizes and removes the damaged tissue. Over time, the area dries, forms a scab, and sheds while new, healthy skin gradually regenerates beneath the surface.

What Are the Benefits of Cryotherapy?

  • Precise treatment of abnormal tissue
  • Minimally invasive, in-office procedure
  • Little to no downtime after treatment
  • Quick treatment sessions for many lesions
  • Minimal damage to surrounding healthy skin
  • Effective treatment for precancerous lesions
  • Reduced need for surgical removal in select cases
  • Gradual healing with natural skin renewal

FAQs

During your appointment, Dr. Burch or Dr. Brackenrich will carefully examine the treatment area and determine the appropriate depth and duration of freezing. Liquid nitrogen is applied directly to the lesion using a spray device or cotton-tipped applicator, rapidly freezing the tissue. You may feel brief stinging, tingling, or cold sensations during treatment. Afterward, the area may blister, darken, or scab as the damaged tissue sheds and healthy skin heals beneath it.

Recovery after cryotherapy is typically straightforward, with little to no downtime required. You may notice temporary redness, swelling, tenderness, or blistering shortly after treatment as the frozen tissue begins to break down. Over the next several days, the area may darken, form a scab, and gradually shed. Most treated areas heal within one to three weeks, depending on the size and depth of the lesion. You can usually return to normal activities immediately.

You can typically expect the treated lesion to gradually dry, darken, and shed over several days to weeks. Some concerns resolve after a single session, while thicker or more stubborn lesions may require multiple sessions for complete clearance. The results can be long-lasting once the abnormal tissue is fully removed, although certain skin conditions, such as warts or actinic damage, may recur over time and benefit from ongoing skin monitoring.
